Lemart Presley: Lemart is the owner and skipper of Jameel II, a Tartan 34, which he keeps in Baltimore and has owned since 2004. Lemart's main cruising area is the Patapsco River and Chesapeake Bay. Lemart enjoys introducing new people to sailing and is always on the lookout for prospective new members of the club. He previously owned a Catalina 27, also named Jameel. Before that, he owned a Pearson Ariel 26. Lemart traces his sailing education to Getaway Sailing School in Baltimore. In 2001, he took the Adult Instruction Basic Sailing Course. Lemart is the club's fleet captain. Past Commodore Jayne E. Turner: In 1972 Jayne took a basic sailing class at New York Sailing School, City Island, New York, and logged 24 hours of hands-on sailing. Shortly after that she completed the Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Sailing and Seamanship Course. In 1998 Jayne crewed for two weeks aboard the S/V Mystic from Charleston, S.C., to Nassau, Bahamas, where she got to use her navigation skills. Jayne has been a first mate aboard a Moorings 38 catamaran, a Moorings 45 catamaran, a Moorings 505, and a Mooring 4700, all in Tortola, BVI. She has also crewed in Greece, in the Seychelles, and again in Tortola. She has operated Global Positioning System equipment, a RIB dinghy with outboard motor, radar, windless and autopilot. She is the club's past treasurer. Past Commodore Marcus Asante: Marcus founded the club and became its first commodore in 2001. Marcus has been a sailing instructor with Living Classrooms Foundation and Getaway Sailing Center. He has also been a sea course instructor with Chesapeak Bay Outward Bound, as well as a waterman aboard the 102-foot 1922 oyster dredging schooner Kathryn Lee, and a first mate with the Alexandria Seaport Foundation. In addition, he has been chief mate for Harbor Cruises and tour guide at the Baltimore Museum of Industry and the Baltimore Maritime Museum. Marcus has gained skills in sail and canvas repair, and he has headed the club's race committee. Marcus is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and owns a Tartan 30 named Soukous. Past Commodore Howard Kea: Howard learned to sail at an early age in the 1970s at summer camp. He later earned various sailing and Coast Guard certificates. He has taken the Advance Sailing/Cruising class and received his certification on a C&C 36. Howard’s first International experience came in 2005, when he served as first mate to club member Robert Jordan in Majorca, Spain, on a Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46 catamaran. Howard is on the executive board of the club. He is experienced on Tartans, C&Cs, Hunters, Columbias and others, from 12 feet to 46 feet, both monohull and multihull. Howard purchased his first boat in 2003, a Holder 12, which he loves to sail. Baxter Smith: Baxter purchased his first boat, a Moth Europa dinghy, in 1966. He has owned a Cal 25, a Cal 34, a Swan 41 and a custom Seidelman 24. He currently owns a Sea Sprite 34 with club member Anne Morrison. He has cruised his boats from the Chesapeake to the Eastern Caribbean and up to Cape Cod. He has crewed for former Olympian Tom Blackallar and America's Cup tactician Dennis Durgan during a series of pro-am match races in the Bahamas aboard Tartan 10 one designs. Baxter has logged 9,500 ocean miles while passagemaking in the Atlantic and Caribbean, and has shot sextant sights. He used the stitch-and-glue method to build a wooden sailing dinghy, and completed one third of degree requirements of the Westlawn School of Yacht Design. Baxter is a past secretary of the club. Past Commodore Arthur Fuller: Art is a native Washingtonian who has enjoyed various outdoor activities since a child. Introduced to sailing in 1999 at the Mariner Sailing School, he learned the basics of sailing and has been a member of the Universal Sailing Club since its founding. Art was club commodore from 2005 - 2007. Black Jacks, a 33-foot Hunter - Cherubini design - owned by Arthur, is docked in historic Galesville, Md. Rob Chichester: Rob has been in love with sailing since his first exprience with the sport back in 1973, and has been sailing every year since 1989. Rob has been a training coordinator and he has skippered in two Lucent Regattas in the Netherlands (1999 and 2000) and skippered a 45-foot tugboat for the National Park Service while in high school. He holds a 100-ton Inland Master's license and is certified by the American Sailing Association to teach basic keelboat sailing, basic coastal cruising and bareboat chartering. Rob was invited to present seminars on cruising the Chesapeake at Cruisers' University in May 2011. He has participated in yacht deliveries along the Atlantic seaboard from New York to the Carolinas. He has planned and executed flotilla cruises all over the Chesapeake and overseas. He recently became a Sunsail Charter broker. He is the owner of the 41-foot sloop Bay Poet.
Anne Morrison: Anne has been sailing since 1980 when she and others chartered a boat in Newport, R.I., to watch the America's Cup race. She has taken several courses on docking, coastal navigation and safety at sea with the Philadelphia Sailing School, U.S. Coast Guard, Women for Sail, and Annapolis Sailing School. She raced on J-27s with the Liberty Sailing Club, assuming pit and foredeck positions. She has done weeklong cruises out of Oriental, N.C.; Duniden, Fla.; La Paz, Mexico; Corsica; the Balearic Islands; Greece and Turkey; Plymouth, Mass.; Catalina Island and elsewhere. She has cruised on Chesapeake Bay, and formerly owned a MacGregor 25. Currently, she co-owns a Sea Sprite 34 with Baxter Smith. Joan Jackson: Joan has been a longtime member of the club and a strong supporter of black sailing activities and collaborating with other black mariner groups. Joan has taken a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary navigation/safety and basics course. She has attended the Black Boaters Summit in the British Virgin Islands for nine straight years. She has served as an assistant to Capt. Paul Mixon, the founder of BBS, and helped him organize the annual summer event. She has chaired the club membership committee for several years. Sandra White: Sandra was bitten by the sailing bug on her first Black Boaters Summit in 2008 and has been on the water ever since. She has taken several classes with the U.S. Coast Guard, Fire Island Sailing Alliance, Singles On Sailboats, and City Island Power Squadron. She's crewed with racing teams on City Island and Fire Island, served as first mate and crew on All-Girls Sail charters on the Chesapeake, as well as crewed with several USC members in her continuing quest to learn and enjoy the sport. Sandra joined the club in 2010 and lives in New York. |
